This is pretty near peak 80s action movies, with The Schwarzengeeger, Carl Weathers, Jesse Ventura all playing their ass-kickin bests. CGI is just hitting the overall film scene in a better integrated fashion but it is not used here; it’s all practical, camera and post-production effects including a few filters that set the stage for many copycats and memes to come. A cool if not a bit unrealistic delvings into a hunter/hunted scenario. With the movie being called Predator, fortunately it’s not the kid-kind here.
Bad-ass special-forces kinda guy Dutch (Schwanzerkeggen) gets his small team pulled into a somewhat dubious job in the Jungles, extraction job over the border, quick in-n-out. At least that’s what his old buddy Dillon (Carl Weathers) says. But as they get deeper into the mission in the crazy jungles of Hispano-Russia-Asialand, things get progressively more fucked up and honestly, it’s bonkers. Great for 1st-time viewers to see how it unfolds, but even with knowing the full reveal beforehand, still a fun movie to re-watch, so that’s a testament to a decent film. Nice mix of genres here, from war/espionage to sc-fi to jungle boogieisms. Plenty of shootemups and even a few blowemups to satiate any action movie fiend.
What else can I say? If you’ve seen it, not bad for a re-viewing if it’s been awhile. If never seen before, this sets up some good situational tensions while working in some good characters going through the Shit.
